June Birthstone - Pearl

Pearls are the birthstone for those born in June. They represent purity, humility & innocence and are thought to bring a long and prosperous life. This may be why pearls have traditionally been used within wedding jewellery. Pearls have also been thought to improve eyesight and ease depression by 19th century physicians.

Ancient people from the Middle East believed that pearls were teardrops that had fallen from heaven while Ancient Chinese believed they came from the brain of a dragon. Christopher Columbus thought that pearls were formed by molluscs from dew drops.

Pearls are actually organic gemstones formed by molluscs when they cover an irritant that has entered their shell in a substance called nacre. The result is a beautiful stone that is highly valued for its colouring and lustre. Natural pearl beds have been almost completely decimated by thousands of years of fishing and so the majority of pearls available today have been cultured. Cultured pearls are raised in pearl farms which protect them from predators. A technician places an irritant into molluscs specifically to grow pearls. They are then cleaned and eventually harvested. Pearls can be found from all over the world and in both freshwater and saltwater.

Pearls can be found in a large variety of shapes, sizes and colours. They are most often strung together to form a necklace or bracelet but can also be set into precious metals to create beautiful jewellery.
